This is a festival to commemorate the descent
of the god, Niniginomikoto. Once nightfall
has set at the former ground of Kirishima-Jingu,
Furumiyaato, Shinto priests in their white
robes emerge and begin to pray. While they
pray they set fire to the holy firewood that
are stacked very high. This fire is to help
the gods find their way back to earth. Along
with taiko drums beating, it gives this festival
a very dramatic atmosphere.
