Mt. Naka- 1345m (4398 ft)

Shaped like a hanging bell, Mt. Naka lies northwest of Mt. Ohachi.  From Takachiho-gawara, the path will lead you up the western side of the mountain.  At the top there is a shallow crater.  Because Mt. Naka is an easy climb, it is bustling with hikers during the Kirishima azalea blooming season.

Mt. Shinmoe- 1420.8m (4659 ft)

Mt. Shinmoe lies northwest of Mt. Naka.  This mountainfs unique feature is that the height of the mountain is much lower compared to the large area of its base.  At the top there is a crater with a diameter of 750m (2459 ft) and a depth of 180m (590 ft).  In the crater lies a beautiful aquamarine colored lake.  The lake is about 150m (491 ft) in diameter and has a depth of 30m (98 ft).  At the southern part of the summit lies a protrusion made by lava, which looks like humps on the camelfs back.  Similar to Mt. Naka, Mt. Shinmoe is abundant with Kirishima azalea.

On February 17, 1959 there was an eruption on the northwest side of the mountain.  To this day you can see gases from the mountain.  Similar to Mt. Naka, Mt. Shinmoe is known as one of the newer volcano within the Kirishima mountain range.

Mt. Shishiko- 1428.4m (4670 ft)@

Mt. Shishiko is located between Mt. Shinmoe and Mt. Karakuni.  The major feature of this mountain is the abundance of vegetation on only one side of the mountain.

Mt. Karakuni- 1700.3m (5559 ft)

Mt. Karakuni is the highest mountain among the Kirishima mountain range.  When viewed from the Ebino Tableland, Mt. Karakuni towers over Mt. Shiratori and the Ohnami crater.  This mountain is the oldest within the Kirishima mountain range. The foothill of the mountain is full of trees and brushes, but volcanic rocks are more present towards the peak.  Once at the top, there is a crater with a diameter of about 900m (2950 ft).  The interior of the crater has scales of steep cliffs, and traces of past eruptions can be seen at the western side of the crater.  Mt. Karakuni is a popular photo spot because of the spectacular view of Mt. Takachiho, Mt. Ohachi and Mt. Shinmoe in foreground.

The Chinese character for gKarakunih can also be read as gKoreah.  It was named this after the imperial grandchild would climb this mountain to view Korea.

The northwest side of the mountain leads to Ebino Tableland.

Lake Ohnami- 1411.9m (4617 ft)@

Lake Ohnami is a crater lake that lies southwest of Mt. Karakuni.  At the eastern foothill lies the border of Kirishima Town and Makizono Town.  The hike up to Lake Ohnami is not difficult because you can drive part way up the mountain by using the Kirishima- Ebino Tableland Skyline Road.

The mountain is about 1412m (4617 ft) high and the circumference of the crater is about 4km (7 miles).  From the top of the mountain to the surface of the lake is about 200m (655 ft) and the lake has a depth of 12m (39 ft).  The blooming trees of spring, the greenery of summer, the redden maple trees of autumn and the bare trees of winter brings out the beauty of the seasons around the lake.  During the summer the cool breeze from the lake and the singing birds help you to forget your troubles.

Lake Ohnami is also full of legends and myths.  One legend is about a girl named Ohnami, who jumped into the lake and turned in a dragon.  Since then it is said that a dragon lies in this lake.
