In recent years, the exchange of information has advanced so much that it has crossed country lines. Within Kagoshima prefecture, seven cities and eight towns have overseas relations with self-governing or sister city organizations.

Ever since 1989, Kirishima has started international relations by building a post for Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) and Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) for guidance in foreign language. Soon it expanded to overseas home stays, international festivals, and various international relations networking (sister city relations, internet, etc.). Kirishima has a sister city pact with the city of Sonora located in the State of California. The choice was made due to the similarities between the between the two. Sonora lies east of San Francisco and is one of the entrances to Yosemite National Park. Blessed with vast greenery and wildlife, Sonora is mainly a tourist and commerce city. Sonora has a population of about 5,000 and its yearly average temperature is about 15 degree C (59 degree F). Its surrounding environment is similar to Kirishima with many mid-size mountains. Sonora's major resource is Yosemite National Park. With an area of about 310,000 ha, this park is California's largest park. It greets a constant flow of tourists all year long.
