/Kirishima Jingu
On May 19, 1989, Kirishima Jingu was designated as one of the
nations important asset.
According to ancient texts, the first Jingu was built in 1460
during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. It was built in Seoto, which
is between Mt. Takachiho and Ohara, but it was burnt down by Kirishima
mountain volcanic eruption.

After many years have
passed, a man named Syoukuujyounin built a new shrine around the
Takachiho-gawara area. But during the first year of the Bunryaku
era, a big volcanic eruption destory the entire shrine. Since then,
the shrine was moved to Masse Jinja in Taguchi.
In 1484, after 250 years of honoring the deity at Masse Jinga, Lord
Shimazutadamasa gave the order to rebuild Kirishima Jingu at its
current location. But once again it was burnt down by a volcanic
eruption. It was rebuilt in the same location in 1715.
The main hall of this shrine honors the deity Niniginomikoto and
seven other deities. Its red laquered gate and the large size of
the Jingu is its beauty. On May 1989, Kirishima Jingu was deemed
as a cultural asset to the nation.
