After 300 years of prohibiting the practice of Buddhism, freedom of religion was granted on September 5, 1876. People no long had to practice Buddhism in secret caves, they were able to practice and preach freely. This freedom allowed Ryusenji to be built for the people of Kirishima. On October 1, 1886, Rusenji was established as the local temple for Kirishima.

In July 7, 1900, the person that started the flow of Jyoudoshinsyu Hongangi (Buddhist sect) gave the temple the name "Ryusenji". In 1911, they built the main hall and four years later it was completed. The statue of Amidanyorai came from the country Bingo (Shinichi Town of Hiroshima Prefecture). It is said that this statue has a history of 500 years.

Currently, the chief priest is the fourth generation within the Ryusenji Temple. Nikawa-hakudo (an expression of Buddhist gardening) is taught at this temple.
