/The former place of Kirishima Jingu

The former Kirishima Jingu stood at the western foothill of Mt. Takachiho, at an elevation of about 950m. According to the highest priest, this shrine was built in 947 but was burnt down in 1234, due to a volcanic eruption. Until the new Jingu was built, this area was a place of worship for 290 years.
